premiere in Indonesian cinemas starting January 30, 2026.
The original animated version of 5 Centimeters Per Second is a classic romantic drama beloved by audiences worldwide, serving as a defining work in Makoto Shinkai’s illustrious career. In this new live-action adaptation, the story of Takaki and Akari is brought to life through a fresh lens, offering both longtime fans and new audiences a profoundly moving and heartwarming experience.
The film is di rected by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, with a screenplay penned by Ayako Suzuki. Alongside lead actors Hokuto Matsumura and Mitsuki Takahata. The film features a stellar ensemble cast including Nara Mori, Yuzu Aoki, Mai Kiryu, Haruto Ueda. Noa Shiroyama, Takashi Okabe, Seina Nakata, Kentaro Tamura, Junki Tozuka, Sho Hasumi, Naoki Matayoshi. Keiko Horiuchi, Himi Sato, Ayana Shiramoto, Aoi Miyazaki and Hidetaka Yoshioka.
Reflecting on the film, Makoto Shinkai shared his emotional response. “At first, watching the live-action 5 Centimeters Per Second made me feel uncomfortable in a way that is difficult to describe. It felt as though I was passing a baton to a younger creator who is still raw and developing. However, I soon found myself completely captivated by the visuals. And in the end to my own surprise I was moved to tears.”
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Di rector Okuyama and the entire crew,” Shinkai added.
Di rector Yoshiyuki Okuyama also shared his journey behind the scenes. “For the past two years, I have dedicated nearly all my time to this project. For the first time, I truly understood from the bottom of my heart what it means to ‘create as a team.’ We poured our souls into this film, cherishing every single step of the creative process.”
The live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters Per Second previously celebrated its world premiere at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). And was released in Japanese theaters in October 2025.
