trenddjakarta.com, Yogyakarta, Indonesia – 11 April 2026 — Yogyakarta Art Book Fair (YKABF), one of Indonesia’s leading platforms for independent publishing, officially launches its pre-event activation, “Road to YKABF 2026,” on 11 April 2026 at Gelanggang Inovasi & Kreativitas (GIK), Universitas Gadjah Mada. Open to the public with free entry. This initiative marks the beginning of a broader movement toward the main fair, while strengthening engagement with academic and creative communities.
As part of its long-term vision, YKABF continues to position itself not merely as an art book fair. But as a cultural ecosystem that connects artists, publishers, designers, and thinkers across di sciplines and geographies. Rooted in the spirit of experimentation and accessibility. YKABF celebrates art books and zines as alternative mediums of knowledge production – ones that are personal, process-driven, and deeply connected to material practice.
The “Road to YKABF 2026” serves as an initial public activation, introducing this ethos to a wider audience, particularly students, academics, and emerging creatives. Through a series of curated programs, including showcases, di scussions, and hands-on explorations. The event encourages di alogue around independent publishing while bridging artistic practice with
academic di scourse.
“Road to YKABF is designed as an entry point. That where new audiences can encounter the spirit of independent publishing in a more open and approachable way. We want to build early
engagement, not just anticipation, by creating spaces where ideas can be exchanged and explored collectively.” Said Syafiatudina, Fair Director of YKABF 2026.
Through this pre-event, YKABF also reinforces its position within a growing global network of art book fairs and independent publishers. Reflecting the increasing relevance of alternative publishing practices in shaping contemporary cultural narratives.
“Independent publishing offers a space where knowledge can be produced and shared beyond conventional structures. It allows for more diverse, personal, and critical voices to emerge – something that is increasingly important in today’s cultural landscape.” Said Tarlen Handayani, a literacy advocate and cultural practitioner.
Expanding beyond di scourse. YKABF highlights the role of art books as part of a broader visual and creative practice – where form, content, and materiality intersect.
“In the context of visual culture, art books are not just vessels of content, but forms of expression in themselves. They sit at the intersection of design, narrative, and material exploration – making them an important part of how we understand and experience contemporary creative practices.” Added Daud Sihombing, researcher, publisher Petrikor
Books.
With an expected audience spanning students, academics, creative practitioners, and the general public. The pre-event is designed to spark new connections and broaden awareness of YKABF 2026 within and beyond campus environments. While building anticipation toward the main event.
The main YKABF 2026 will take place on 8–10 May 2026 at Langgeng Art Space, Yogyakarta. Bringing together 43 curated exhibitors from Indonesia and across the globe. Alongside a di verse range of programs including exhibitions, talks, workshops, book launches, and performances. As a continuation of the momentum built through the pre-event. The main fair
is set to offer a more immersive experience within the expanding ecosystem of independent publishing.
